861 12 volt voltage regulator ?

I need a new 12 volt voltage regulator for my 861 diesel. What is the difference between an economy quality one and a premium quality one besides price? The one I'm replacing only lasted about three years. The one on it prior to this one lasted over 15 years. Can they be rebuilt?

pinion: If it wasn't made before about 1965, it is suspect, no matter the price. When alternators became the mainstream, generators/VR's took a back seat. If reliability/maintenance free are desired, you really have little choice but to switch to alternators. I have three still functioning gen/VR , but both still use their 'from the factory' original VR's.
