641 Carb Issues

I have a 1958 641 that will run for a few minutes and begin to sputter and eventually die. I just replaced pretty much the entire ignition system (it previously had resistor core plug wires, I replace those with copper core wires). It does start and run better now until it begins to sputter. Sometimes if I give the carb a few smacks with a soft face hammer, it will clear up. It seems that the float may be sticking. I got this tractor from my 80 year old father Whois not able to use it anymore. He had a tractor collector work on it a couple of years before I got it and supposedly, he rebuilt the carb. I thought maybe I d take the car off and go through it again and when I checked the model number on the carb, it was a TSX 428 which, from my research was not for the 601 series. It was for Jubilee through 600 series. I m wondering if the guy that worked on it just swapped out the carb for another that doesn t belong on this tractor. Should I look for an original model for this tractor or rebuild the one on it. It appears that there are a couple of models that went on this series tractor and how do I know which one should be on it?

There is not a lot of difference between the 641 and Jubilee. The engine is essentially the same. You would do better with some testing. Test the fuel flow. Shut the gas off. remove the plug at bottom of carb. let the gas drain from the float bowl, and then put a can in place to catch the gas. Turn the gas back in catching it in the can. You need to have adequate flow to fill a pint container in two minutes.
