Bought another SOS tractor

If someone could help me make a positive ID that would be awesome!
There is also an issue or two with the SOS that I could use help with.
When you put it in reverse, it wants to go forward until you let the inching pedal up.
Then it goes backwards as it should, Park works fine. All other gears work fine.
Secondary, the PTO shaft spins constantly and the cable is froze up.
Cable is in the "in" position and it won't move.
It also does not have a posi-traction lock on the rear axle.

I would try band adjustments. Pto turning just gonna have to put up with, nature of the beast. pto cable just have play with to free up. 1965 3000 gas.

Thanks Shaun, I appreciate the ID.
I know the PTO shaft tends to spin on the SOS models but this one
isn't just spinning around. It is full power, full speed, all the time.
My other ones spun, but could be stopped with a 2 x 4 wedge.

Aside from being frozen, the PTO cable must be broken and/or out of adjustment.

Differential lock was an option.
Perhaps in later years it was standard
but not on the early units.
Early high tin with complete underdash
covers. Those are hard to find. Are
those 24" rears?
Creeps forward in reverse. What's not to
love about that.

Nice looking tractor with minor issues. I like it.
Before doing anything crazy, soak that cable for days with Kroil or juice of your choice. It might free itself up.

Creep forward in reverse, with the inching pedal depressed, is also normal for an SOS.

I'm wondering, since you say your PTO is fully powered, has someone possibly adjusted your cable so tightly that it merely feels like it's frozen?

Having said that, I have had a PTO cable freeze. The freeze happened up in the slider, I did as others have said. I soaked it repeatedly at the dash with a penetrating oil. Mine happened to be Archer SPL plus. This process took several days, IIRC, and a bit of pry force to break it loose in the end.

31024E is a 3000 series ag chassis model with a gasoline engine, independent 540 rpm PTO and a Select-O-Speed transmission.

C102928 is a 1965 serial number

5C31B says it was made on March 31, 1965 during the day shift.

So it should have the 192 ci gas engine instead of the 201 that they switched to on 4/1/68.

Differential lock was not standard, it was an option.

Thanks guys!

Ultradog, yes they're 24's. The underdash covers were a surprise.
I know some people don't like them, but it's neat to have a full set.

Larry, I wouldn't call this one a "creep" forward. More like a slow drive.
When I did let the inching pedal up, it kind of felt like it was trying
to go both directions and was fighting itself but reverse won.
It also doesn't stop when you depress the inching pedal.
The brakes will stop it but it doesn't just stop like my other one did.

I will get it home this afternoon and start freeing up that cable.
Then I'll dig out the manual and read up on adjusting the bands.
If that's what it needs.

Otherwise it seems to be a solid tractor with no options.
No power steering either, but I have another tractor I could take
the PS off of and transplant it to this one if needed.

A good and proper band adjustment never hurts. I doubt it will eliminate the tractor's natural tendency to want to move forward in reverse, however.

As to the not stopping part, I'm betting you have a sticky feathering valve.

(quoted from post at 13:08:09 05/22/20) It's a 3000, so 158 gas, 175 diesel
The 192 gas / 201 diesel was 4000's.

You are right, my brain wasn't in gear when I typed up my earlier response.

"As to the not stopping part, I'm betting you have a sticky feathering valve."

Thanks again Larry. How would I prove/fix that?

Prove it - likely can't

Fix it - you can do one of two things:

1. Make sure the fluid is clean and proper and run it awhile. See if it comes out of it.

2. Take the control valve body out, remove the feathering and clean/polish it and its bore up.

Maybe I need to adjust the bands?
