How did Ford get the 860 at approx 40 hp up the 861 approx 56 hp?
That's a pretty big increase for the same cubic inches.

have not seen the 56 number before, but they did increase compression ratio and increase carb size. Maybe some other changes that I don't know about?

The 40 HP is more realistic because Nebraska test shows little over 40 for drawbar. The modern way is flywheel HP. So they may make that much at flywheel. Used to rate at PTO which to me is more realistic.

Ozander, you have to compare apples to apples. Gross to gross belt o belt PTO to PTO drawbar to drawbar. The XX1 as JMOR said gained mainly from higher compression but also larger carb and also larger manifolds. My 960 has 961 manifolds and carburetor to help in pulling competitions. An 801 will do no where near as much work as an 800 on a gallon of gas from my experience.

It didn't.

According to NE tests 562 and 640 respectively, the PTO HP of the 860 is 43.04 whereas the PTO HP of the 851 is 45.65, both at rated speed.

The 861 had a bit higher CR as well as a larger carburetor, exhaust and air cleaner. It also used significantly more gasoline.

Where are you seeing those numbers? I suspect that the 40 hp is the PTO or drawbar number and the 56 is an advertised engine hp, although it was probably closer to 52.rb and intake manifold.
