Fun with pies. . .

Loading pie weights back on the Demonstrator, It comes off easy enough but need to remove a weight or two to get the plate to balance out to reinstall. Very easy and fast enough with another FEL.
Still need to get the 881D engine put back together and then the FEL from this one transferred over. The pies should also wind up on the 881D. Meanwhile I have an 8N to drag home tomorrow. It has rear outer weights that will wind up on the Fergy TO-20 and a few dozen other projects before I get to the 881D . . .

I always completely reassemble pie weight sets to remove install. A bit time consuming but not difficult.

Looks like someone torched out 2 segments for valve stem clearance. Had he indexed the mounting disc properly only one (per side)would have needed modification.

I have seen pie weights notched out before and these were not a hack job. The rim has been replaced and now the valve stem is on the back side so those notches are no longer needed for the valve stem. However, these pies will wind up on the 881D and I currently have no idea where the stems are.
Eventually the weights will get removed and repainted to go on the 881D.

Bruce, I tried it that way once but next time I just did them all one at a time. It is really pretty quick with an impact wrench and if your bolts have rubber washers on them.

So have I but one wonders why.

Often (not always), one can obtain necessary valve stem clearance without modifying any segments simply by maximizing adjacent weights to opposite sides with the mounting disc positioned as shown in the photo.

That's the way I do it, SC.

After doing it a time or two, one man can mount or dismount both sides in well under an hour with just a ratchet, extension, socket and bottle jack.

Dean, do yours have the rubber washers? To me they make the handling much easier.

None of mine do but I have in the past used garden hose washers.

I just remove the bolts one at a time and set them on the floor.

I have replaced my missing ones with hose washers too. I like the bolts being captive in the weight as they make good handles.
