Neutral Safety Switch

I have a 61' Ford Select o Speed. I have the shop, parts and owners manuals and neither of the gives me a diagram of, what I assume to be, the neutral safety. A wire comes out of the transmission cover but then I followed it and it is just coiled up and not connected to anything under the gauge dash. The tractor does start in all gears, further indication that this might be the neutral safety. How can I assure the connection is proper in the transmission case and what is my end connection up by the battery? Does anyone have a diagram or something to follow?

Thanks, Sean

The manual transmissions have a neutral safety start switch. On the Select-O-Speed transmission it is actually a park safety start switch and it should only allow the starter to turn if the gear selector is in the park position. If the wire is disconnected then some previous owner bypassed the safety switch. To test whether the wire and switch are still able to function set your meter to resistance, or ohms, and measure between the end of the wire that is not connected to anything and a good ground point. It should read infinite ohms except when the gear selector is in the Park position, and then it should read zero ohms. If it tests good and you want to put it back into the circuit properly, follow the two wires from the starter push button on the dash to see where they go. One should go directly to a ground point if the starter button is working without the park safety switch in the circuit. Remove that wire from the ground point and connect it to the wire going to the Park safety switch.

Better yet, once you've done Sean's tests and it all tests good, remove the ground wire from the starter switch button. Then connect the wire from the transmission to the starter switch ground directly.

Thanks for your time and explanation, I appreciate it! I'll be reaching out to you if I have further issues. Thanks again, Sean
