Hydraulic Cylinders

This is a Ford Implement question and I thought this was the best place for the right response:

I have a Ford 538, MOCO and I have ordered lift cylinder kits. The question is that there is a cap (Item 6/6.1) on the ram end of the cylinder (Item 1) and the question is: Is the cap item 6/6.1 held in place the by internal snap ring Item 5 or 9 and removing the crud to find it and thus having access, removal of such allows the entire contents of the cylinder to be removed?

As usual, thanks for your time.

Thanks Shawn for the reply, but I don't understand your terminology. You can see the 2 (mounting to the MOCO) holes in the castings/forgings in the parts break down. Those are for mounting bolts. No other holes that I can see.

The current plan is to undo the top (ram) bolt from the MOCO and with the hydraulic hose disconnected, using a pry bar force the ram all the way down. Having done that the piston can/should'may fall to the rear and will/should/might protrude through the opening in the frame allowing the top to stick out in a very accessible fashion. Remove the snap ring holding the cap in and (after reconnecting the hyd. hose to the cyl.) use the tractor's pressure to push the ram out and in doing so, blow the cap out/off with it.......just thinking through the process (if it works) as I type this.

Once out, the other snap ring I presume (otherwise what's the use for it), can be removed and the packing and end cap will separate from the shaft of the ram. I'm assuming that there are 2 O rings on the cap.

We'll see. Right now I have some hay to cut.....as soon as it dries up a little.

ark, this is probably the type retainer that Shaun is describing.

Thanks Jessie for the pictures. It is a different cylinder. I got my kits today, really fast delivery from Messick's, and I was going to put them in
tomorrow....start putting them in. I thought Id test it one more time today before moving into the shop and it's holding fine. The problem is this is my first
time to use both the implement and the hyd control and it is an after market and the open center detent isn't clearly defined. I didn't have it all the way
shut off and the control was leaking, not the cylinders. So they are going in the parts bin for when needed.

Nice to hear from you.

Good. Someday if we survive all these trying times, I'll try to come visit you and see your place. Been a long time. I haven't been able to go to my country place since March 12 and really miss that!
