Too much play in stering wheel on ford 3600

First thing you have to do is figure out whether or not the play is in the steering box or the external linkage. If it's in the box, sector
shaft adjustments are in order. If it's in the external linkage, tie rod end replacements are needed.

A few questions before an answer can be determined:

1. Is it power steering or manual steering?

2. If it is power steering, does the steering wheel rise up and fall down noticeably (more that 3/16" or so) as you begin to turn the wheel? (It would rise up turning in one direction and fall turning in the other direction)

2. When you turn the steering wheel do the arms on the sides start to move almost immediately and the front wheels themselves delay in starting to turn, or do the arms themselves delay before beginning to move? Or is there some delay in the arms and then even more delay in the front wheels?

(quoted from post at 14:15:09 05/19/20) Nothing moves during play then arms and wheels move at same time and yes it does have power steering

And the steering wheel doesn't raise or lower while it's turning before the arms begin to move? Then it sounds like the sector gear end play needs to be adjusted. The service manual will have the correct procedure and correct amount of end play you should adjust it to. From looking at the parts drawing on that model it looks like there there should be oval shaped caps opposite where the shafts come out of the gear box that have the arms attached. Those covers come off and there is an adjusting screw with shims.
