SOS shift cable

Does anyone know of a source for the selecto-speed upper shift cable? Seems mine has stripped off the connecting ears that mesh with the lower cable. It's the 540/1000 rpm pto model with red tranny and red hash marks on gear plate either 981 or 971.

if it has the two speed PTO it's a X81 transmission, altho the cable is the same.

The used market/ebay is your only hope for another cable. They come up on eBay regularly, usually as a whole shift mechanism and can be pricey. Contacting salvage yards is another route.

I'd take a look at the mechanism looking for a reason the cable broke. Hard shifting at the valve body? Kink in the cable housing?

When adjusting the length the lower cable was bent some but I've greased and readjusted the cover. Just got off ebay with the purchase of the center shaft. If I'm remembering correctly both ends of the cable
look identical while now one end looks like a small triangle. Wondering as a last resort trying a tack weld. Thoughts?

My friend had a 971 here that had shelled out the input shaft and TLC. We bought a used one from Feron in PA and put them in.
When we got it back together I drove it around a bit with the transmission cover off and shift cable not hooked up. I shifted it with a big screw driver in the side of that roller rack - whatever it's called. It worked fine.
If I had the problem of a bad cable I would modify the tranny cover so I could shift it with a little lever.
I doubt it would be difficult to do.

6-8 years ago a friend rehabbed a 971 for another friend. He drilled a hole in the left side of the cover and mounted a rod with a 90 degree lever on it through the hole with a grommet on it. It worked good for two years. Another friend bought it and has been using it since.

This SOS belonged to a friend then he bought green and sold to me real cheap. Been thinking of swapping to a stick tranny but don't know which to look for. The home grown remedies are good news, keep um coming.
