Ford 3910 Steering Gear Removal

Bit long. I posted earlier under Ford 3400. Come to realize I have a
3400 with a later 3910 steering column assembly. Figured I would
start a new thread since it?s not a 3400 gear. I have a leak at the shim
and gasket (20/21) and would like to address it by replacing them. It
appears I need to remove the sump assembly where my power
steering lines go to do this. I will also replace seal (9) while I?m at it.
I?ve got it tore down to where it is in my picture. My issue is there
appears to be a bushing or something on the steering shaft. Need
help on how to remove it. Don?t want to damage anything. It is shown
between (7) and the washer (18) and sits right above the sump
assembly (8). I don?t think I can remove the Sump Assembly (8)
without the piece above the washer 18 being removed. Any help and
guidance to get the sump assembly removed would be appreciated.
Thought I would also add my numbers on the tractor for identification.

Can we see a picture of the whole tractor? What does the front axle look like? I'm wondering if it might have been something else to begin with and had the transmission from a 34000 swapped into it when the prior transmission failed.

Something seems up for sure. I ordered a starter for a 3400 and fits
and bolts right in as it should. Could the transmission be from a
newer model and the steering was left on the transmission? At any
rate everything about my steering column lines up with a 3910
steering. Wonder if numbers on transmission can tell when it is from.
Thanks again for the help. I did end up being able to get to the shim
and gasket that I needed to get at.

It does appear the serial number and production code were re stamped. I think you?re on the right track of transmission not being original.

The sheet metal, grill and front axle are definitely from a 3400. The numbers don't look re-stamped to me, but I'm only seeing a picture. The date code and serial number say that it was made in 1975, which was the time that they were still making the thousand series along side the new x600 series, so it might have got a steering box from a x600 series model by mistake.

Definitely a little frustrating having parts ordered for 3400 steering
and not being the right parts. Correct ones are on the way. If you look
at the numbers you can see, above it there is another line of
numbers where it?s corroded. In red box in new photo. I?ve since
cleaned it up and it?s the Model number. It almost looks like
someone machined the surface and re stamped serial and
production code. Out of curiosity how did you come up with 1975 as
the year? Thanks again.

They all came from the factory with that one section machined smooth. I don't know why they didn't make that smooth section a little larger or why they didn't use slightly smaller numbers to stamp with so they could stamp all 3 numbers in the smooth part.

Out of curiosity how did you come up with 1975 as
the year?

The Unit Number (production code or date code as some call it) is 5B21B. The 5 at the beginning means it was built in a year ending in a 5. The first B means it was in February. The 21 means it was the 21st day of the month. The B at the end says it was during the day shift. So it was built on February 21st during the day shift in some year ending in a 5. The 3400 was only made from 1965 through 1975 and they changed the sheet metal and grill in 1968, and yours has the later style sheet metal and grill so the year has to be 1975, as that is the only year ending in a 5 after 1968 that the 3400 was made in. Plus the serial number, C458268, is a 1975 serial number.
