640 Split Rear Housing From Transmission

Anyone done this? The O ring at the rear of my hydraulic pressure line that goes through the transmission is bad. When I lift the 3 point oil shoots out from between the mating surfaces of these two housings, into the rear housing. Hydraulic system barely works, doesn't build much pressure.
I can't find mention of this in my manual. Is this a difficult job? Any pitfalls to watch for?

A rear housing and transmission split is not difficult, but safety measures should be taken like wedge the front
axle so the front half wont pivot on you and roll over. Drain the hydraulics, remove the running boards, and
split away. I already had removed the engine in my picture, but if engine was still attached to transmission I
would have rolled rear housing back on a floor jack. Do you have a cement floor to work on?

Thanks, michford. that's what I needed to know. I do have a concrete slab to work on. I'll jamb some large chisels under the axles to prevent the engine etc from tilting sideways.

You will need a new gasket for between the trans and rear housing when it goes back together. Soak the gasket in water to make it pliable and fit better when putting tractor back together. The gasket may not fit so well until soaked in water. A dry fit gasket can make it look like it does not fit.

Dont use Permatex, silicone and hydraulics dont always play nice together. Use the correct gasket and Gasgacinch to keep gasket in place during reassembly. The next guy working on your tractor will thank you.
Gasgacinch

Do it safely!! Block the front and roll the rear with a trailer jack supporting the center housing. The rear rolls more easily than the front.

hanks for your comments!

She split apart right easy. It does appear that the pressure pipe O ring busted, probably shifted a little last time it was assembled, whenever that was. Also as an added bonus I found a 5/16" locknut and washer in the bottom of the rear housing.

(quoted from post at 10:24:53 05/18/20) Thanks for the follow up, I bet that o'ring failure is a rare occurance.
aybe someone didn't know to put wheel bearing grease on it to hold it in place.
