Ford 4000 Diesel considering buying

Always tell us if it's a 1962-64 four cylinder 4000 or a 1965-75 three cylinder model.
Without that much info it isn't even worth speculating on value.

craigs list, St joe , MI. talked to guy on phone. did n ot think toask year. It seems like a very good price if tractor is good???

Ford 4000 search on st. Joseph mi craigslist turned up one hit... no pic, $3k price tag... and in the description, said it was a 5000. That one?
Still not enough info to give a good answer.

It is a 4 cylinder diesel. owner unsure of year. seems to think it is a later 70's. It is a 5 speed with power steering. looks rusty, surface rust, not through, looks like original paint from factory. tin looks very straight for year. Rims look ok in picture but he does indicate it has a rusty rim but holds air OK.

I will say that it COULD be a very good buy. I agree that the paint looks original, and that it looks unusually straight for its age. It appears to have had a new injection pump, starter and alternator. It has apparently had the SOS replaced with a 5 speed. The rims APPEAR very good and the rubber appears to be excellent.

Showcrop, I have not gone to look at this yet. What should I look out for? I currently have 2 ford tractors, a 48 8N and a 640. both run good but seem to need quite a bit of maintenance , messing with points etc . I am going on 75, and no longer up for major repairs. Could this tractor be OK for some landscape work. I have a pond that was dug out, and the excess dirt was somewhat leveled out, but is a little too rough too disc and level with current tractors, about 7 acres, plus the power steering is an attraction.

Bill, you can make a limited test of the engine by asking the owner to not start it until you get there. It is useful to know how well it starts cold. They have a factory preheat but that should not be needed above 45 degrees. You should check that the three point lifts and stays up. if it bounces a lift cylinder rebuild is needed though that is not a really big job. It would do a good job of leveling the ground with a three point blade or landscape rake.
