How do you shift the over/under

I get what the over/under sherman does. I understand the shift pattern, I have read the replies that tell me I have to put the thing in standard to properly run the PTO for the backhoe. I have one slightly stupid question....

Do you shift it into the range you want before you start the tractor? Or simply at anytime as long as the clutch pedal is fully depressed? I assume the main trans has to be in neutral at any rate.

I don't wanna rip the guts out of it before we even have a chance to use it

Yep, you're on the right track. Engine running clutch peddle down. I leave the transmission in a gear so I know if I got the Sherman engaged or not. There is a neutral that I seem to have no trouble finding.
