Hi all:

Went to the drive shed today to get the Ford 4000 SU, and I discovered it had a flat tire. Tried filling it so I could look for the leak, but when I took the air chuck off to check the pressure, brine started jetting out from the valve stem. It looks like the valve core disappeared when I took the chuck off. Can't fill any more air now obviously.

I put the dust cap back on and it's holding water, so to speak. I put a jack under the frame to keep the weight off the tire.

Is there anything weird or unusual about replacing the valve core on this machine? Is it as simple as replacing an automotive valve core?

As long as the internal threads are still there, you're ok. Always turn you valve stem to the top when dealing with fluid filled tires.

From what I see, to get the valve core out, you unscrew from the stem as detailed here:

rather than pull it out like an automotive tire? And then you need a tractor water / air core?

Thanks.

On the 640 I couldn't get air into either of the rears. Both valve cores had corroded in place. I ended up drilling both out and chased the valve stem threads with 1 of the 4-way tools they carry at the auto parts store. Be careful when using the thread chaser, I thought a had more to go and gave it just a little bit more twist. It turned out that the tool was already at the end of the threads. Well, with that "little more twist", the valve stem split! So, I found a metal stem cap and ground the one end until I could see right thru. Then screwed it onto the split stem with teflon tape applied. Then screwed the stem back in and somehow it holds air.
Had to bore out an air chuck to make way for the modified metal stem cap too.

Man. That's an ordeal. I hope it doesn't make you feel too bad if I tell you mine just screwed out. Didn't even have to take a set of grips to it :)

Some you win, some you lose. I'm sure I'll pay for my good luck later :)

Got the valve core out no problem. While the tractor was sitting, I lost a good amount (not sure how much yet) of the ballast.

Any advice on how to replace that without special equpiment?

I understand you can do a gravity fill from a bucket, but it's not clear to me how the fluid can get in the tire from the bucket, through the valve stem, unless there's a vent for air to get out. Am I missing something?
