Ford 860 Slipping out of third gear

Hi,
My Ford 860 slips out of third gear. All other gears including reverse are fine. I tried the easy fix and replaced the shifter detent and spring with new parts, but it is still slipping out of gear. I assume the next step is splitting the tractor for repair. How difficult is it to diagnose and repair this issue? Not even sure if parts are available any more.
Looks like I'll be brush hogging in second gear for now.

If anyone has any advice or recommendations I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Bill

Most likely you have worn teeth on the 3rd gear and shift coupler. This will require a complete teardown.

It could also be a worn shift fork not fully engaging the coupler, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

Not uncommon with an overhauling load but if it does so under load, things are badly worn.

Yes, repairing such conditions will require a complete tear down and most new replacement parts are NLS and/or VERY expensive.

You could probably convert it over to a DDC S-O-S for less than it would cost to overhaul your 5 speed with needed new or good used replacement parts.

Sorry, but couldn't help myself.

I do believe that this is the first time I ever heard of someone recommending replacing a crashbox with a SOS. Wait until Jerry hears this!
