hello. we have a 5600 ford, during winter I replaced the water pump, sending unit and thermostat 160 degree, first started using it today for planting oats, made 3 rounds and the heat guage went right over to the red side, we then checked the radiator, didn't seem to be hot, we then removed the cap and checked the water temperature, it was right a 160 degrees, we continued to plant checking the water temperature , stayed right at 160 degrees, so good we have a bad sending unit or could the instrument cluster have gone bad? and how ould you chech which one it is? the instrument panel worked fine before all of this, I did take it out during winter to repaint the hoods, could a wire mixup be causinf the problem? thanks for help

Is your tractor a mid-1979 or older? If so, does the fuel gauge read high also? If so, you have a bad instrument voltage regulator. To check it, remove dash with wires still attached. Probe both terminals on unit with the key on - unit looks like a circuit breaker. One should be hot with the key on, the other should be flashing on and off. If they are both on all the time, it is bad and causing both gauges to read high.

thanks for reply, fuel guage reads alright somebody suggested mismatched sending unit? I am sure the one I got is all aftermarket and from overseas I assume.

I was operating under the assumption that your cluster was original. If it has been replaced, and the gauges are the later magnetic type, then the sending unit would need to be changed as well.
