Hello. I am from Finland. We do not have 1000 series of gasolin engines in Europe. I am interested in buying a reasonable condition for a 256G engine or two. Used parts dealers have not responded to email inquiries. Parts of the normal 5000 to change the crow grop model are also of interest.

Most members here are in North America so shipping costs would probably be prohibitive for most, but we do have a few European members so hopefully one of them might have something for you.

Are you looking for the parts to convert a true ag chassis 5000 (5100) into a row crop 5000 (5200)? Or just to convert a 5200 row crop from wide front to narrow (or narrow to wide)?

Have you tried the ebay sites for some other European countries, like Germany or the UK?

Did they build a 256 gas?
Someone here will know.
It would not be difficult to build one
yourself. Start with a 256 block, crank,
rods, cam, lifters and valve train from a
diesel. Replace the pistons with gas
pistons. Buy a 4 cylinder gas head and
intake manifold. Those parts from a 233
should be the same. The gas governor and
distributor drive on a 4 cylinder engine
is the same as for a 3 cylinder engine.
The front block plate from any diesel
with CAV injector pump is the same as for
a gas engine.
Hard parts to find might be a good
carburator and 4 cylinder distributer.

Jerry,

Yes, they did make a 256 gas. One would need to be careful with the pistons, as the 233 and 256 pistons would have different deck heights, which means they would not be interchangeable.

233 pistons will not work in a 256...
233 = 4.2" x 4.2" bore and stroke.
256 = 4.4" x 4.2" bore and stroke.

I bought a 256 diesel at an auction last
week. When I get a chance, I'll be
pulling a 256 gas out of a 5000 so I can
put the diesel in its place. The gas
engine will be for sale then... though
like Sean said, shipping from the U.S.
(Wisconsin, in my case) to Finland will
likely be too expensive.

Getting an engine to Finland is not necessarily a problem. Many Finnish importers have an address in USA from which a sea container leaves for Finland every two or three months. Delivery and duty are likely to be higher than the price of the engine, but the total price is tolerable. What is the condition of your gasoline machine and what is its value?

Looks like I screwed up on my last post. It's not the deck height that's different between the pistons in a 233 and 256, it's the diameter. I was confusing it with the relationship between the 256 and the 268.

So a set of pistons from a 192 gasser would work. Those are common enough.
Would be a LOT cheaper to ship the gas head, manifold, governor drive and distributer plus a few peripherals than a complete block and crank with those things.
I'm assuming he could find a 256 diesel over there to start out with.

I'd be willing to sell parts off the engine, like Ultradog suggested, or the complete engine. Other than the carb needing a good cleaning and new gaskets after sitting, it should be ready to run. It has a new distributor cap and plug wires, and a Pertronix electronic ignition that I never got around to installing.
My email should be open, if you're using the modern view. I've been having trouble posting tonight, trying to make my email open on classic.
