4000 diesel out of time?

Can anyone help diagnose my Ford 4000 diesel. It's a 3cyl CAV. Sputtered blew tons of black smoke and died. Won't restart. Doesn't turn over right. Will try to upload a video.

Pumps don't just lose time all of a sudden. Sounds like a potential compression problem to me. If it were mine I'd be doing a compression test.

I agree with Bern in that inj pumps don't get out of time unless shafts or gears break. Have you checked air intake to be sure it's not clogged? Have you checked for good fuel flow from tank to IP?

Thanks for the reply! Good fuel flow to the pump which has been rebuilt along with injectors. The pump had a bad cam. I will definitively test the compression next if I can locate a tester. I think the sound it makes is not what
it should sound like even it had a fuel problem. When this happened, it was running, then start running very rough and rolled huge amounts of black smoke, then died. I am used to fuel problems such as air or lack of fuel but this
one is a bugger. The air intake is clear. The tech manual says to check pump timing with excessive smoke but I can't see how a cav pump could jump teeth. I am not sure how to go about checking pump timing. It is set at zero like
its supposed to. On to compression testing.

Other than internally it's nearly impossible the the injection pump on those engine to get out of time.
I'm nor sure what's wrong but after listening to the video several times I notices each time it made that sucking or blowing sound thru the exhaust number 2 cylinder as on compression stroke.
