Ford 8730 Calibration numbers

I calibrated the transmission on my 8730 on got 3 numbers. 72, 79, and 72. Does anyone know that these numbers mean, I called my dealer but they are the most useless people in the world and told me they don?t know anything about them.

They don't mean much to anyone other than your computer. The numbers represent the pressure value from 1-99 needed to just drag the particular clutch pack being calibrated. This number is then stored in the computer so it knows how quickly to ramp up the pressure for smooth shifting. The only time you should get concerned is if they differ greatly from each other, or if any of them venture into the 90s.

Thanks, atleast the numbers are good, but it didn?t fix what I hoped it would. After it?s warmed up when I release the clutch pedal in the lower forward gears (1-9), it slams into motion no matter how slow I let out the clutch. Must be a faulty solenoid for the lower gear clutch pack.

Not necessarily. Do you have any fault codes? How does it modulate if you simply throw it into gear without the clutch pedal? If it shifts smoothly without the clutch pedal, it's NOT the solenoid.

A faulty input shaft speed sensor will cause the jerky clutch pedal, as will a faulty clutch pedal pot. Don't be in a hurry to throw parts at it until you do some diagnostics. I'm sure the solenoid is not cheap.

Below is a link to a video I made a couple of weeks ago for the benefit of my students. It was on an 8730. You'll have to watch it a handful of times before it will likely make sense to you. Also note that you can maximize either screen, which is what you'll want to do to make out the detail.

Note in the video that I did two tests. The first was using the clutch pedal, the second was just throwing it in gear. In both cases it modulated just fine. This was taken after the repair (input shaft speed sensor).

I?ve only tried putting it in gear without the clutch pedal once and it felt like it almost popped a wheelie so I never did it again, as for the codes I have only had 2 or 3 codes pop up. They were C codes, c7 or 8 it?s been a couple years since they showed up though. I put the disk in the ground and it went 10 feet before putting itself in neutral and flashing the C code. Thanks for the video that?s pretty cool stuff, unfortunately we only got to work on case and John Deere this year in my highschool.

So are you saying that you currently have no codes? If not, I would suspect one of two things:

1) You have a sticking modulation solenoid. You could swap MC1 with MC2 to confirm. You'd have to swap the pins in the wiring connector along with that swap. The solenoid is #34 in the link below.
2) You have a faulty clutch pedal pot. This can be easily determined by monitoring the signal voltage from it as you cycle the clutch pedal. In the video you viewed, it's the top blue line. Of course, it can be done with a simple voltmeter. Look for a smooth rise from about 1 to 4 volts as you let up on the pedal.

At the moment I don?t have any codes, I have before but they haven?t come back in about 2 years. I originally thought it was the clutch potentiometer, but it wouldn?t make sense for it to be faulty only on gears 1-9 but work fine on 10-18 and all reverse gears would it? That?s what makes me think it?s something to do with the clutch pack for gears 1-9 instead of the potentiometer.

I agree. I think the next thing I would do is what one of my former students coined "swapnostics". Swap MC1 with MC2 and see what happens. Not just the solenoid coil, but the whole stem.

Last one I worked on that was doing that had debris on the modulating valves. Took them out and cleaned them. Then did the recalibration. You need to get a manual. There?s probably one on eBay.

I?ve never used a pico scope bern. I use the automotive one we have a lot. Just a FYI the pedal potentiometer on the genesis tractors is the same as an automotive throttle position sensor for early 90?s F-150. Much cheaper from Napa than CNH ( and usually in stock)

Thanks, I?d like to get all the service manuals for my tractors because I?m graduating from an ag mechanics class in highschool and going on to another ag class in college. Having the books will just make my life easier in the long run lol.
