What is wrong (or not wrong) with this diesel fuel?

I put new diesel in our tractor, as we changed the filter, had to seal the tank valve and put the rebuilt injector pump on. I don't really want to put this old fuel back in, for a few reasons....

It was in the tank for several yrs. Everything is new and clean. The big reason is this stuff STINKS. The odor is unbearable. I have asthma and this stuff just kills me. The new fuel isn't so bad.... the odor is light.

Also this stuff is DARK. Not algae contaminated, its just dyed or aged really dark red.

Why does it smell so bad? It's not dirty or thick.

Dunno why it stinks.
I bought and parted out a 3000 that had
sat for 13 years.
The tank was full of diesel fuel.
I drained some into a pail and it was
dark but clean. So I used the whole tank
of it in my other tractor.
No problems.

Red dye is put into fuel to identify off road diesel fuel (no road taxes charge on off road) and home heating oil. Having Red dyed fuel in road vehicles can get you large fines.

o knowledge of WHY it stinks, but spilled some (probably 20 year old) diesel when removing tank from an old bus and neighbors even commented on the smell. It was strong! Right wind & bet you could smell it a quarter mile away.

Burning it on the burn pile would stink up everything in a 100yds with rank soot.

I cleaned the tank out, it was pretty clean to begin with. My nephew says its "old high sulfur" diesel... I don't know if hes right or wrong.... he deals with a lot of heavy equipment.

I'll ask around, someone will take it for something I'm sure.

Does algae contamination cause a foul odor?
