To Ray, thanks for the comments. As far as oil type goes, Ford recommends tractor hydraulic fluid, which is what I use, but ATF certainly won't hurt it. I'm concerned about your oil turning black so fast. If it is in fact getting too hot, I would think you would be able to smell it. If so, I would think it is due to band slippage (or clutch pack slippage if your operating pressures are low). As far as maintenance goes, other than oil and filter changes, periodic band adjustments are about all an owner is expected to perform (or have done for him). This info is not in the operator's manual, so if you want to do it yourself, you will need to find a service manual for it. As far as glitter in the oil, that obviously is not good either. I would first drain the oil and pull out the inlet screen to see if you have any "big" problems attached to it. If this is inconclusive, I would get an oil analysis kit (I get mine from Cat) and have a sample tested to see what's in it. One more thought on band and clutch slippage - you should be able to run the engine at high idle and stall the engine in any gear with the brakes. If there are certain gears you can stall it and certain gears you can't, you should be able to tell from a troubleshooting chart in the service manual where a particular problem might be. E-mail me if you need any more info.
