961 PTO shaft

The PTO shaft on my 961, looks a little stubby compared to a "modern" tractor. In will also slide in and out of the tractor about 3/8 of an inch. I see extensions for sale, but what about the slop?

The end play of the PTO shaft is controlled by the bearing retaining collar. It will be necessary to remove the shaft assembly to make any adjustment. If you do that, I'd suggest you take a critical look at seal and bearing condition - they are not particularly expensive.

I'm not sure I understand 'stubby' - I've never had any issue with the stock shaft and attaching any implement.

Is your shaft 1 3/8"?

My 971 had a new shaft when I got it. It is slightly shorter than my other 4 cyl Fords. No one here will know of an extension, but you will see over-running clutches.

The PTO shafts on my implements fit the tractor, but are almost touching the tractor.
