Have a '66 Ford 3000 3 cyl Diesel. Couple questions I can seem to find a concrete answer to.

1. I have the engine disassembled and have an overhaul kit. Everything seems to be within spec but the valves on the head had a rubber valve seal on the back that looked just like this:

The manual does not have a diagram but states only the exhaust valves have an umbrella style seal and the intake only have an oring seal along with the rotator. For me, all 6 had the above linked seals. What is the correct way to seal these?
2. The tractor was verrry hard to start even with thermostart, just had a bunch of white smoke. After starting it ran well and strong. I found that on the top of the block two of three peanut shaped holes for coolant had a fairly large chip missing which allows coolant to bypass the head gasket towards the edge of the block and into the oil. I used a dremel to clean out the area and got some JB weld steel reinforced epoxy to rebuild those areas and hopefully get a good seal. Anyone ever seen that before?
Hopefully after rebuild and fixing those chips it will start a lot better!
Thoughts?
