I know I ve seen this asked and answered a bunch but it didn t pertain to me at the time so I didn t retain it. My 73 3400 s 3 pt corrects very often. What s the diag? How can you find out what is leaking under the cover?

Remove the Left side step plate and then
the 6" round cover.
Then start it up with a heavy implement
hanging on the 3 point and look up and
inside for a veritable shower of oil
dripping down from above.
Lots of oil will mean the seals in the
lift piston are leaking.
You will need to pull the lift cover to
renew the seals.
Not a hard job except the lift cover is
quite heavy. Use an engine hoist or get a
buddy to help remove it.
Buy the lift cover gasket/piston seal kit
from this site. About $12? Plus shipping.

Will it complicate it at all that this was equipped with the hand brake?

If the lift works but bounces up and down the lift piston o-ring is leaking, remove the lift top and replace the o-ring and backup ring.

I wouldn't mess with that left side brake just to look inside.

I assume I still need a new cover gasket? If not is o rings standard size? I ve got a kit of nitrile orings.

It is a 2.600" ID o-ring with 0.215" thickness. It also has a backup seal. And yes, you should replace the top cover gasket. You should also purchase a top cover o-ring kit. You can get them all from this site at the links below. You should also follow the procedures in the service manual for adjusting the control linkages and check the cam follower pin and replace it if it is worn while you have it opened up. Unfortunately, this site does not carry the cam follower pin, but you can find it at Messicks or partspring for about $8.00. The part number is V32720.
