Ford 860 wont go forward???

My brothers ford 860 has always jumped
outta gear going down a hill, and 3rd gear
has never worked as long as he's owned it.
He lives on a 1acre lot in town 5 miles
from us, so the tractor usually comes out
to our farm for the summer and goes to his
place to plow snow in the winter. Anyway
last I talked to him, he said the tractor
wouldn't go forward only back, I think he
said it like jumps out of gear when he
puts it in a forward gear. I dont remember
for sure. So anyhow my question is any
ideas what's wrong with it and how hard to
fix?? Thanks,
-Garrett

First thought on those 5 speeds "jumping out of gear" is always worn detente plungers. Will the forward gears work if he holds the shifter in gear the whole time, or does it jump out of gear so violently that it will do it even if he is trying to hold the shifter in place?

The short answer is that it is very unlikely that there will be a simple fix to your problem. What is the condition of the rest of the tractor? Are you willing to spend $500-$1000 to fix it? Do you have the tools and mechanical experience to rebuild or swap a transmission? Paying for labor will likely put the job beyond the value of the tractor.

I agree with Strum that it sounds bad. I would lean towards a used replacement. Swapping out is not all that bad but you will need a means of lifting. At the minimum a floor jack. It is basically just time. If you share your location you will get advice on where to find a transmission.
