640 Hydraulic Filter

When those were new (long ago) there was a kit for dealer installed hyd filter. Probably not much chance of finding one today. Pictured in FO-20 I&T manual.
 
Probably installed 25?? of them from 1957- 1964 Seldom see them any more. I have an 860 and a 960 with hydraulic filters on them

Sounds like there'r interchangeable thru 600-800-900 series along the years.

The holy grail would be a drawing with dims. I'd have the guys churn a few out. Nothing wrong with dreaming...
 
I have no photos but there is at least one photo in the I & T FO-20 Manual.

Sadly, there was no filter installed as OEM equipment. Had there been, pumps, etc., would have lasted considerably longer, given routine filter changes.

Vintage Ford vane pumps are more susceptible to wear resulting from dirty oil than are vintage Ford piston pumps, though both will eventually succumb.

Vane pumps are also more expensive to repair, though (expensive) parts are still available, or were when I last checked (probably 10 years ago).

The least expensive alternative to repairing a badly worn vane pump is conversion to a piston pump.

personally wouldn't bother, as the tractor has been fine for 50 years without it. Furthermore, it is somewhat akin to the the bypass oil filter on old cars & the N tractors. All the oil circulating into the pump and on into the bearings or hydraulics is not filtered. Not a full flow system. Not a suction (into the pump filter). What is filtered here is the output of the pump when no lift is commanded & the dump of the ram cylinder when it is lowered (about 10-12 ounces). It is true that statistically speaking, all the oil will be filtered, eventually, if enough time passes.
