6610 series II 4X4

The Housing under the gear shift levers is getting way too hot I think? To the point you cant kepp your hand on them? What might cause this?

I believe that the transmission has its own oil cooler on that model. Check to make sure that the fins aren't clogged, but as Bern said, hot enough to not keep your hand on it shouldn't be bad for it, but depending on the fluid that's in it, I wouldn't want it to go above 180 degrees as some hydraulic oils begin to break down around 180 and so do some seals. But 180 degrees is too hot to touch at all without getting at least 1st degree burns so if you can touch it and not actually burn your hand immediately, but you can't keep your hand on it for long, then it's probably in the 140 to 160 degree range.

FYI, the temp that would set off an alarm on a FNH Genesis tractor is 245. This is why I don't take notice until after 200.

If the engineers that designed that tractor made it so the high transmission temperature fault doesn't happen until 245 degrees, then go with that, but from what I've heard from experts in the hydraulic fluid industry is that hydraulic fluid begins to break down at 180 degrees.

[size=18:01a4a6314d]Hydraulic Fluid Temperature[/size:01a4a6314d]

How hot is too hot? Hydraulic fluid temperatures above 180F (82C) damage most seal compounds and accelerate degradation of the oil. While the operation of any hydraulic system at temperatures above 180F should be avoided, fluid temperature is too high when viscosity falls below the optimum value for the hydraulic system s components. This can occur well below 180F, depending on the fluid s viscosity grade.

All I can say for sure is that the Genesis runs the exact same hydraulic oil as the 6610, and was designed/engineered by the same company.
Also, auto trannies routinely run well over 200 without issues. Engine oil as well. In fact, most engine manufacturers want the engine oil to
run at 210+ to boil out any moisture.
