Charging issues 5610 II

Having trouble chasing down a charging issue on my 1989 5610.
Alternator tests fine by 2 different shops. All connections on the alternator are clean and tight. New voltage regulator. The charge light glows very faintly, almost can't see it in the day light.
Any thoughts where to look next?
Thanks
Roy

Did you verify with a volt meter what the alternator is putting out? Sounds like you have a diode back feeding in the alternator to make the charge light glow.

I have had the alternator off twice and tested by 2 different, reputable shops. Both say it is functioning properly. I will have to check it's output on the tractor.

oyou know if alt is Lucas, Motorola, or other????

(quoted from post at 19:55:13 04/02/20) Lucas. Charge light faintly glows when it is running.
ny wiring/connector voltage drops which cause one side of bulb to be a different voltage than the other side will cause bulb to glow. Other possibility is the often called "diode trio", which is 3 diodes inside the alt which supply power to regulator....one of these can fail and charging still functions, but the voltage at this point (which is one side of bulb) will be lower than other side of bulb and therefore the glow.

Hi Bern
I never knew it had a battery temp sensor? Where is it located ?
Thanks
Roy

Is there a way to test the diode trio ?
Thanks
Roy

/quote]I would look at waveform on oscilloscope, but most don't have those. I will give thought to other means. Mean while, measure battery voltage before starting and then measure again while running at speed so we know if charging or not. Temp sensor is pad under battery.

I have had it for 15 years or so and there has never been a pad
under the battery. I have had the battery tray out just last
summer and never noticed any un-used wiring in that area. I will
have to look again.

on't worry about pad for now, just do the battery voltage measurements to confirm or deny charging.

It's #27 in the link below. Unfortunately, it does not show where it's located. It should be on or near the battery tray. Look for a 2-pin connector somewhere in the vicinity.

If your tractor was truly built in 1989, it should have a Lucas alternator on it that looks similar to the one in the image.
Battery temp sensor

When the Lucas on my 92 5610 developed issues I replaced it with a common Delco 10SI 3 wire alternator. About $40 plus core charge. Used original bracket as a pattern and built new bracket. Connected charge lamp wire to #1 pin on Delco, and looped #2 down to output. Works good and easy to troubleshoot in the future.

On mine the temp sensor was under the battery tray.

Hi All
Thanks for all the assistance so far.
Tested voltage at both the battery and the red connector on the alternator, no voltage change when running, 12.8V
Searched around and found these connectors taped up at the front of the head. The length makes them look more like they connected to the alternator rather than the battery tray?
Any thoughts? Pics help?

When asked, you said it was a Lucas alt, so responses have been according to that , however, I am pretty confident that you photo shows it to be a Motorola, with an external regulator and no battery temp sensor.

(quoted from post at 15:45:12 04/03/20) Sorry for the confusion. It does have the external regulator.
oes connector to Voltage regulator look OK/clean?

Remove wire from Field spade on alt and temporarily jumper from BATT to Field spade on alt and this will provide max field current and max alt output if all is well inside alt and batt voltage should then charge greater than the 12.8 volts measured previously. If this works as described, we know more about whereto look for problem. ALSO, as you connect the jumper, please observe whether or not there is a spark at connect/disconnect & report.
