Question for Diedeltech (Ford 3 cyl noisy)

I have a 1965 diesel 3 cyl Ford tractor
It is very noisy (diesel usual knock)

My diesel 3 cyl 135 is less noisy

Newer tractors are less and less noisy

What is the reason of that ?

Thank you in advance

Bart

Newer engines are usually more quiet do to injection timing. Early Ford three cylinders are more noisy in my opinion because of excess built in rotary pump advance on some models. Most engines might have pump speed advance of 4-6 degrees pump, (8-12) engine. Some Ford CAV DPA pumps have 9 degrees pump, (18) engine. When static plus speed advance get around 35 degrees BTDC running, diesel noise does get louder. Also some three cylinder pumps make much more noise on the test stand too, when compared to four and six cylinder pumps..

If it's just noisy diesel tech has it correct
If it's making a knocking sound crack the injector lines loose one at a time, if the noise goes away when you crack one of the lines loose you've probably got a bad injector.

The 10 series tractors that had the headland pistons were the ones that really knocked. Everyone that bought one around here complained about the noise. Some of the BSD replacement engines knocked and loped at low RPM also. I can tell a Ford Diesel engine a mile away by the sound, Don't even have to see it.

Thank you Dieseltech and others for your replies.

I operated tractor for many (50) years I used
ear plugs when on a 3 cylinder Ford Tractor.

Thanks again

Bart
