601 is the series. 641 is the model number within the series.
In this case, a 601 with a 4 speed transmission and transmission
driven non-live PTO. A 651 for example, would have a 5 speed
transmission and transmission driven, non-live PTO.

601 was a series of tractor models, and the 641 was a model within the 601 series. The middle digit of the model number was the differentiator of the various models and it specified which transmission, PTO and 3 point lift options it had.

All of these are tractor models within the 601 series:

611 - Select-O-Speed transmission with 3 point lift but no PTO
621 - Four speed transmission with no 3 point lift or PTO
631 - Four speed transmission with 3 point lift but no PTO
641 - Four speed transmission with 3 point lift and non-live PTO
651 - Five speed transmission with 3 point lift and non-live PTO
661 - Five speed transmission with 3 point lift and live PTO
671 - Select-O-Speed transmission with 3 point lift and single speed (540 rpm) independent PTO
681 - Select-O-Speed transmission with 3 point lift and dual speed (540/1000 rpm) independent PTO with ground speed PTO as well
