Have had this Ford for many, many years, but this winter it became hard to turn the steering wheel both ways. Lots of flop in the front tires. Where should I start first to solve/repair this problem? Thanks, Copperhead

" Do you have any advice on removing the steering wheel?"

Yup.....this is what I do on steering wheel removal.

Use a 3 jawed puller for a 3 spoke wheel!!

Took about 25mins...start to finish, on my 3000!!

Works great!!!

Not a hard job either. Worst is pulling the steering wheel and tin off to get at the column. Thanks for the advice Ultradog.

The nut on the top of the steering is 3/4 rusted away, Do you have any advice on removing the steering wheel?

I made this contraption.
It's out on loan at the moment or I'd get some measurements for you.
Works good.

The first thing is the spindal thrust bearings

Assuming this is a manual system and not power steering?
We don't know what you've done so far so I would grease the whole front end and add 90W to the steering box.
That done I would jack the front end up and see how it steers with no weight on it.
Could be dry upper bearings in the steering box, could be shot/gone thrust bearings in the spindles. Floppy steering might be sector gears need adjustment and or ball joints worn out. The entire steering system on those are pretty simple but they do wear out, even if kept lubed. Parts are not expensive even to rebuild the whole shebang - upper thrust bearing in the column, thrust bearings and bushings in the spindles, tie rod ends, etc.
Not a hard job either. Worst is pulling the steering wheel and tin off to get at the column.
They steer pretty good when they're up to snuff.
