Ford 4040 loader

Is it a 4040 loader, or a loader on a 4040 tractor? I can't find any reference on the parts site for a 4040 loader model, but there were a few tractors that 4040 was at least part of the model numbers. The part number starting with C0NN indicates the part was first used in 1960, so I am assuming that it is a loader on a 4040 heavy industrial tractor from the early 1960's. I don't know of any lower control cable on the loader itself, so I an guessing that it is for some other part of the tractor, possibly the lower half of the gear selector cable for a S-O-S transmission or possibly part of the cable steering system. These are only guesses though, and my crystal ball is at the shop being polished so you'll have to give us a more detailed description of what the cable controls.

Are you looking for parts for the 1801/4040 cable steering? Parts for that steering system have not been available new for a long time. I like the steering system but I have found it better to change them over to the 4140 style steering system if you are going to keep using the machine. I have a Ford 1841 that still has a working cable steering on it.

I like the tractor and would like to keep using it. Im new to repairing tractors and dont know much about the 4140 style steering. Im open to options.

With the 4140 steering they got rid of the cable based control for the control valve in the cylinder itself, and instead moved the control valve up inside the steering column and they added a real steering gear to the column with a single sided steering arm and track rod on the left side, so it was more like the power assist of the ag chassis models rather than a fully hydraulic system like the 4040.

If you can't find a used cable at a salvage yard, look for the entire steering system off of a 4140 at a salvage yard. You would need everything except the parts that are the same as the 4040, which are the pump, the front axle main casting and spindles.

Some folks have replaced the cable steering setup with a hydraulic steering system off of another brand or model of equipment, but that takes some fabrication skills.

Sean has pretty much covered it. Where about are you from? Where I am from there were a lot of industrial tractors. I have also found stuff on e-bay and craigslist, got the steering column off e-bay for $100.00 but it cost about the same amount to get it shipped. There is one out there now, but too much for me for something that has just been cleaned up and painted blue. I have included the link for your review. I have found that if you are able to find cable steering parts, they are most often in the same shape or worse. They are sixty-some years old now. I have one 40405 that has been changed over(4140) and I have been using it since 2003 with no problems. I have another 40405 that still has the cable system but it does not turn real tight. I am going to change it over to the 4140 type steering and store the cable style before it breaks. Years ago there was a company that had an aftermarket power steering system, I don't know if they are still around and/or offering it. I have seen one(1801) that someone had tried to fit a boat steering system to it. It was very unsafe, it had trouble backing up and didn't last too long. I have a 1958 ford 1821 that the PO fitted a hydraulic valve to, but to no avail. Maybe someone out there knows of another possible solution.

If you don't find the parts you need for cable steering or to convert it over look up - Jackson Power Steering. I just removed the cable steering off my 1871 and installed one of his kits. I think it was well worth the money.
