Dust cap in distributor

The problem is the clearance of the cap from the rotor. The dust cap acts as a spacer to hold it up.

rue, for sure, but, my experience is that the tolerances are so loose that most will be OK, but you will know immediately whether the rotor hits cap towers or not!

Also the clips or screws likely won't be the right length to hold the cap with out the dust cap (spacer as showcrop noted).

And as JMOR noted it might work, you might not get it together if the rotor lines up with a cap tower and hits. Of course it might set right down between towers. But beware, if it does set down and you make the clips work, when you crank it over the rotor will likely hit a tower. If you're lucky it will only break the rotor. Maybe the rotor and cap, maybe more damage.

Do you feel lucky?

was lucky.

I have seen several tractors come in with out the dust caps that ran. guess pending on which rotor and cap, it can be done. Cap was loose on distributor but it ran.

Glad it worked for you. I've seen the other side of it when the guy wasn't. He even went as far as to bend the clips to hold the cap after deciding he didn't need a dust cover. So yes it must depend on the cap and rotor.
