Ford 3600 Alternator Identification

Have Ford 3600 that has had the engine replaced (before I purchased it) with a "BSD made in England" with a Part Number 6007 and Eng Capacity of CID/333. Been told that BSD means it is a Ford Basildon built diesel. Long story short am having electrical issues and might have a bad alternator. There is no label on alternator to help ID it. I know the replacement alternator for a 3600 is a "D5NN10300D" (from what I can find). Does anyone know if it would that be the same for a BSD?? Thanks for the help..

As far as I can tell on the Internet, your 3600 probably originally shipped with a BSD329, and the 4000 had the BSD333? Anyway...does the alternator have a drive on it for the tachometer? That might help ID it.

I think the X600s came with a Motorola alternator that used an external regulator.
No tach drive on them. Tach was driven off of the top of the oil pump drive gear under the oil filter.

Will go look for the engine sn by Dip Stick. will also look for tach drive. I do know that the alt had 4 wires on the back. 2 went to posts and the other 2 were slide on. One was on the a black plate that had 2 connectors on it (but only one used). An there was one terminal that had nothing attached. will let you know tomorrow what i find. Thanks

It doesn't matter what engine you have, a 3600 should have an alternator that looks similar to this, less the "AC tap".

Checked an yes there is a cable (like old fashioned speedometer cable) running from there to tach.

Here is a picture of mine. Have it pulled an trying to find someone who can check it out. So far no luck. On the plus found out my battery is good it was just low. Now on negative pulled instrument cluster an can see were wiring was repaired before but looks like something got up there an ste a few wires so will be looking for help on a finding a wiring drawing.

That does look like the original style Motorola alternator for that model, and it used an external voltage regulator, so your problem might be the alternator, but it might also be the VR. Get yourself an I&T FO-41 aftermarket service manual. You can find them lots of places on-line for less than $25.00. It has the original writing diagram as well as electrical system troubleshooting procedures.

That's the one. A quick and easy check of the brushes involves putting 12 volts to the field terminal, which is the terminal inside the rectangular box. You should see a spark when you hook it up (make sure the alternator case is grounded if you're doing it on the bench). No spark equals worn or sticky brushes. They are easy to replace, simply remove the two screws and pull the brushes out.

Well found someone who could check out the alternator and it was bad. Got it fixed but now found another issue. Looks like some mice got up and chewed ALL THE WIRES behind my instrument cluster so need to fix that. I have two connectors which feed up to everything (cluster and switches). one has six pins and one has 2 pins (i have pictures but don't know how to attach them). Any wiring info (drawings etc) would be appreciated.
