Ford 2000 stuck in gear

Soooo, today I was using my ford 2000 and while I was moving some stuff around at my ranch it stuck in gear and it wont let me shift into any other gear. I was doing some very light duty work and only for about 15 min. The clutch works fine and it drives just fine in the gear its stuck in. No noises happened before it wouldn't shift and everything was as usual. The transmission is the 8 speed version. I did not have time today to take off the shifter housing and inspect it. What are some common problems that can cause this? I need to get this fixed asap since snow is coming and I need this tractor to work! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Pull the shift cover. The tip of the shift lever will wear off on the sides, and allow it to slip between the shift rails. We used to build
them up with brazing file them smooth, and that corrected the problem. It's not uncommon. Make sure everything is in neutral when you
reassemble it.

When I have the shifter cover off and the shifter out, how do I know it's in neutral before I reassemble it? Sorry, I have worked on a ton of engines and other mechanical devices, but I have zero transmission experience!

Greetings from Hillsboro, more or less. . . .
When you pull the cover, you will see slots in the shifter forks. When all the slots line up, you in neutral.
That tang hanging down from the shifter is what goes into the slots to make them slide.

Thanks, I will open it up in a day or two and check it out. It would be awesome it it's a simple problem such as the end of the shift lever being worn. Really bad timing for bigger problems!!!

Last question before I open it up and take a look today. I do have a I&T manual but it doesn't explain this too well. When I remove all the bolts to the shifter cover will everything lift off as one assembly? I have removed shifters from a few different trucks before and I had to remove snap rings and compress a large spring to pull the shifter out of the transmission. However none of those transmissions had a large cover such as this.

Sorry couldn't answer sooner. No, just remove the bolts, and lift it straight up. When you reinstall it, make sure the shifter goes into
the neutral slot, put in a couple bolts, and shift it through each gear, before you button it clear up.

Got er done today. Super easy. The end of the shifter has been "repaired" in the past by someone with a welder and grinder. It looks as they tried but failed at a quality repair. So I suppose I will order a new shifter assembly in the near future.
