Ford 8730 no reverse

Hi Guys,
I have a Ford 8730 that won t go into reverse. All other gears work fine with no problems. We checked all the solenoids and they are all engaging. We even swapped the reverse solenoid for another and still doesn t work. There is a H3 code on the shifter but that code is for a ground speed sensor and I don t think this should effect the reverse. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Moses

That sounds strange. It would seem that you should have a code for a slow fill in a clutch pack or a bad solenoid. A good start point would be to check hydraulic pressure.

Doesn't sound strange to me. when I lost speed clutch 3 on my 8770 due to a failed weld on the clutch drum, there was no electric fault. Therefore no code. I removed the valve body and used compressed air. C3 had an evil hiss rather than the characteristic snap to it.

My guess is that something is mechanically or hydraulically amiss with directional clutch R in the 8730. It's almost an identical transmission to the 8770. wormser8512, pull the valve body and do the air test.

New Hydraulic pump about 500 hours ago. Had a buddy check the presure and it s within normal limits.

I don't have that manual in front of me to look up the H3 code (I do have at the shop), but my first gut
reaction is that it doesn't sound like a major problem to me.

What I'd do as a really quick test would be to plumb a pressure gauge into the lube port. As you shift the
trans into forward you'll notice the gauge dip and then come back up. The same will happen each time you
upshift and downshift. Then shift into reverse. If the gauge needle does not move, you have a solenoid or
electrical problem. If the gauge drops way down and stays down, you have a major internal leak. And I'm sure
as Larry can tell you, that would make for a bad day.

H3 is "No speed matching" "defective ERPM speed sensor or open or short to +12v on ERPM signal line to TPM pin 6.

When my 8830 had this error it was broken wires on the speed sensor. Trans worked normally but would not speed match gears when slowing down with the inching pedal.

I would test as Bern suggested. Also I would order the ultra-command powershift service manual and start going thru it.

IIRC the reverse pressure port is the 2nd one up from the front bottom on the control valve. Put a long hose and gauge in there and shift into reverse and see if you build pressure or not.

Thank you guys very much. I guess I have my work cut out for me on Monday. Appreciate all of your input and advice! Moses
