Distress signal for my selecto speed that I'm purchasing from friend that's going green. Sometimes it goes in a gear and most times it won't. I think it's an 881 with the red tranny case. Reading on the forum sometime back about some kind of rivet plate in the tranny and the rivets are near gone, don't know much about this one. Any experts out there??

If it works sometimes, it's not the torque limiting clutch and/or input shaft (at least not yet).

Insufficient information for much more.

As Dean says: Insufficient information.

However, check the fluid level, cleanliness and viscosity.

Clean the suction screen which will also drain the oil so that you can put the proper clean lube in to the proper level.

Thank you guys for the help. Going by the archives and seeing your names I know who's who when it comes to the sos. Also noticed my shifter has the red hash marks making it an early model. Saw some pics of the filter screen and will pull it, clean and replenish with the 134d fluid then check back. He has a manual. I have cataract surgery tomorrow so it may take awhile.

I restored a 64 4000 diesel industrial a few years ago with the SOS transmission. New torque limiting clutch plate. Was not long before the rivets sheared out and had a little elongation in the holes. I ordered the next diameter Hi-lok that was compatible with the new holes. The holes were reamed to a close tolerance fit for the fasteners in the hub and the plate. Fastners were cooled in dry ice and installed. In the last two years have had no problem but the tractor is not used that much. Click on the link for the Hi-loks.
Hi loks

(quoted from post at 06:05:05 11/06/19) Thank you guys for the help. Going by the archives and seeing your names I know who's who when it comes to the sos. The hash marks are not an indicator of which SOS is in it, only that it left the factory with an early. Most were swapped out.

Don't have to be. The only difference between the pre-65 shifters was that the earliest ones had the red hashmarks and when the DDC transmission came out, those were eliminated.

The transmission could have been updated without updating the shifter. Most with updated transmissions still had the original shifter. It was not part of Ford's update offering.

The easiest way to tell what the transmission is, although it's not failsafe, is by the raised casting number on the left side. 312259 is generally an ORC (Red) transmission, while C0NN-7006-B and C3NN-7006-B are generally DDC (Blue) transmissions in the '59 to '64 tractors.

I should add, the color of the case is not a good indicator. Many tractors with updated transmissions had particular owners. My grandad was one of them. I would have been also. Grandad had them paint his DDC transmission *01 series red to match the rest of his 871.

Pulled the screen and you couldn't even see the color of it for the gobs of gunk and after dunking in gas and scrubbing with a wire brush then holding to the light there are a few holes that show light so more soaking plus pulled the IP on same side then flushed with diesel. The PO has had it for many years and has very limited mechanical skills so I'm pretty sure it's all original. He borrows my Massey for PTO work as this one quit turning with ground contact. Could this be another symptom of a dirty screen? Thanks Larry. Pics to follow.

WOW! If that screen is coated so hard that soaking it in gasoline won't take it off . . .

"IP" ??? Not sure what this refers to.

Are you saying Ground Speed PTO doesn't work? If that's what you're saying it has nothing to do with the screen. Ground Speed PTO is a direct gear connection to your differential.

If you're talking about other than ground speed PTO, the screen could be a factor. Or it could just be that the selector lever is in the ground speed position.

IP is inspection plate and sorry about confusion, no not ground speed but neither the 540 nor the 1000 work when tiller is engaged with ground.

Does the tiller (PTO) rotate when raised off the ground? Then I'm guessing you need to get the screen/fluid issue resolved to start with before pursuing this issue further.

I don't know where you are located. Are you in an area where Archer Lubricants are available (typically from the Dakotas south and east to Iowa and Missouri)?

I'm an Archer distributor so take that into consideration, but IMHO you won't find a better fluid for clean-up and run of that transmission than Archer Uni-Fluid XP. It exceeds the old ford M2C-41 spec which that transmission called for when new and also exceeds the current NH M2C-134D spec which is the replacement in today's world for the old M2C-41 spec.
