Stronger Ford starter

Is there a stronger starter for the 3 cylinder engines? When we put the tractor back together again we ended up using the flywheel and ring gear from the gas motor (we swapped a 3 cylinder 4000 diesel engine, the old motor was a gas 3000). The gas starter doesn't seem to crank the engine over fast enough when its a cold start (30 degrees or less)
 

I do have a good diesel starter with solenoid for Sale if you're interested. $50 + shipping..around 20 bucks in a large flat rate USPS box

Yep... the gasser's starter just won't cut it on a diesel.
Too bad it means another split for a diesel ring gear.
 
The last time I replaced a Lucas starter I put a Bosch type starter from a later model Ford on it. It was an exact fit and turned the engine a lots faster and cranked better. If you have trouble finding one contact me and I'll tell you who sells them, about 200.00 new.
 
I was hoping not to split the tractor, but thank you. If I remember the diesel starter barley touched the ring gear.
 
He would need a Bosch replacement for the gas starter unless he changes the ring gear. The OEM Lucas is fine on a 3 cylinder. They used the same starter on 6 cylinder engines with twice the displacement.
 

He would still need to swap on a diesel flywheel ring, but the Bosch starter is better than the Lucas, we have both, each time a Lucas goes bad it gets replaced with a Bosch
 
The one I replaced was on a 515 Ford with 3 cyl. diesel. I agree the Lucas is used on 3, 4, and 6 cylinder tractors but the Bosch turned the engine noticeable faster which cranks quicker. You will need the diesel flywheel gear but is is worth the cost and work to have a Bosch.
 
It?s not surprising that a new starter cranks faster than an old worn out starter. For this application I?ll save the $100 thanks.
 
No idea what type of Bosch starter these guys are peddling. The Bosch starters used on late Powerstars, E series TLB?s and LX skidsteers with Basildon engines were direct drive and no more or less durable than a Lucas. Those starters are generally more expensive.
 

The 5" Lucas starter used on Ford tractor since 65 has 2.7 kw output power.
The Bosch starter used on the Power Star and newer models has 3.1 kw output power.
The Bosch is no more durable than the Lucas but the extra output power helps spin the engine over faster which helps with cold weather starting.

My cousin has a 92 model 7740 with original Bosch starter, he also has a 90 model 7710 with a 5 year old Lucas.
Even thought the Bosch is older than the Lucas the Bosch spins the larger 304 engine over faster than the Lucas spins the 7710's 268.

There is a gear reduction starter that replaces the direct drive units, it also has 2.7 kw output so not sure if it would spin a engine over any faster than the Lucas or as fast as the Bosch.
Looks like it might be easier to get to the back bolt

DB Electrical shows less than $40 difference between the three.

I bought a starter for our 4400 gas over the summer and the bendix gear is now sticking.
