The one I replaced was on a 515 Ford with 3 cyl. diesel. I agree the Lucas is used on 3, 4, and 6 cylinder tractors but the Bosch turned the engine noticeable faster which cranks quicker. You will need the diesel flywheel gear but is is worth the cost and work to have a Bosch.

It’s not surprising that a new starter cranks faster than an old worn out starter. For this application I’ll save the $100 thanks.

The Bosch is most likely a gear reduction unit. I suspect that direct drive starters will go away like incandescent bulbs someday soon.

No idea what type of Bosch starter these guys are peddling. The Bosch starters used on late Powerstars, E series TLB’s and LX skidsteers with Basildon engines were direct drive and no more or less durable than a Lucas. Those starters are generally more expensive.
