Going from SOS to 5 speed

I have a customer wanting a 5 speed tranny to replace his SOS. His 4000 4 cylinder is a utility. My 5 speed is in a row crop. I don't think that matters but
I wanted to make sure. Thx

The row crop vs utility should not make a difference but there are a couple of gotchas to consider depending on the year of your 5 speed.
First is the splines on the coupler between the transmission and pinion shaft in the rear end are different. You can make one fit if you cut two of them in half and weld one together.
Also, make sure you use the block plate that came with the transmission. There are two different thickness over the years.
Others here will know more about When those things changed. I think? it was between the 00 and 01 Series.

The row crop would have the be a 901 because of pedal configuration and I believe prior to serial number 106116 there was a change to trans to pinion but check your parts manual to be sure. You will also need clutch flywheel and engine plate if different width. I just did a '59 sos into the back half of a '55 5 speed utility. Changing out the whole back half from the flywheel back is a lot easier.

Your SOS tractor will have a fine spline pinion. On a five speed, to change from coarse to fine spline all you you have to do is grab the output shaft pull it out and push a fine spline output shaft in p!ace.
