need 4cyl info..

I'm hoping bern or one of you other knowledgeable guys can help..

Do any of you know when the head bolt/ stud size changed on the 233-256-268 4cyl occurred?

After looking into a studkit (messicks $945) to put my older head on to the newer web style 268 block I have, I'm thinking maybe ill just find the newer style head and rocker arms..

Anybody have casting numbers?

thanks

August of 1987 is when the switch was made from 1/2 to 9/16" head bolts. Note two choices for #7 head bolts at the link below.

I'm not aware of any casting number changes to the block when they went to the bigger head bolts, although there very well may be. I can tell externally which size head bolts it has by looking at the size of the hex head. If it takes a 7/8" socket, it's a 9/16" bolt.

Was there a casting number change for the later model head??

The 87840243 is a NH number, so that would be new enough to use the 9/16" bolts.

I'm sure the casting numbers on the head changed, but I do not have that specific info. That's really getting into the weeds.

I would certainly consider drilling out the holes if it were mine. You wouldn't have to remove much to get the 9/16" bolts to pass through because the existing holes are already quite a bit bigger than 1/2".
