Next step for reviving my 640

Ok here?s where I am right now. Just a little info, the tractor I?m attempting to get running again had been sitting unused for probably 20 years. The fuel tank is surprisingly clean but the lines are long rusted away so I rigged a temporary fuel supply, cleaned the carb and installed a new bowl gasket, hooked up some jumper cables to my old pickup and it fired right up. Initially this tractor was parked because the clutch stopped working. I was just a kid and didn?t think to check into it. Now, after making an adjustment to the clutch linkage it seems to be working. I was able to move it back and forth as far as my jumper cables would let me travel. I?m just st taking baby steps here and want to see if it?ll operate as it should without throwing a lot into it so here?s my plan. I was thinking to just get a cheap 12 volt battery, put a resistor in line with the coil and see how it does. This is a just for now fix to get it running long enough to see if it?s worth doing it right. Will this work at least temporarily? If it works out I have no plans to do anything other than make it a usable piece of equipment. No full on restoration or anything like that. Just a runner to do some light shredding and whatnot with.
Thoughts?
Thanks to all,
Jeeper

12 volt battery and a ballast resistor will let it run, but it won't charge the battery. I would recommend disconnecting the generator from the voltage regulator while you're running it with a 12 volt battery. You can put it on a trickle charger between times that you're running it. If your plan is to convert it to 12 volts once you think it is worth it, then I would go ahead and do what you've planned for now.

Not a good idea to run a generator disconnected. Any residual magnetism inside the field coils could cause
it to generate power with nowhere to go. This will cause the generator to overheat and be damaged.

Evidently not in your case. The key word in my last post was "could" cause the generator to overheat. It all depends on the residual strength of the field coil magnets. If the magnets are weak enough, any power developed is turned into heat and dissipated via the fan.

Six years? So what are you doing? Do you keep the battery on a charger then not run it long enough to need the battery to be charged while in use?

3000D = diesel
You need a battery to start it (or park it on a hill) and then no electrics required.
I know, I know, it's a schlocky way to run a tractor for 6 years.
I've had an alternator and wiring harness on it twice but stripped it all off to put it on another tractor to get it sold.
