600 Generator wiring

I'm scratching my head so will start from beginning. Have
600 gas 6 volt positive ground with gen. Sometime ago the starter
push starter on trans went bad so I put in a push button starter in inst.
panel. Later tractor started acting up so replaced coil and plugs
and found that my keyed switch (on and off only) was faulty.
I replaced the keyed switch with an on and off flip switch. Now the
only way I can get it to start is ground the generator wire which
makes voltage reg go to minus 10 and thus after 2 hrs dead battery,
but tractor will continue to run (just will not restart) unless jumped.
I know gen wire must go somewhere else just don't know where. Any suggestions
appreciated. It's for sure I am no wiring guru.

here are you getting the ground? and, what are you calling the "generator wire", as the generator has Field, Armature and Ground terminals.......no "generator terminal".?

My tractor is not located where I can readily look
at the generator, but the best I remember there are
two post on the generator. One post has two wires
and the other post only has one wire which is the wire
I am referring to. You can ground this wire anywhere
on the tractor and it will start, but that's the only
way it will start the way it's wired.

Three terminals on generator and none have more than a single wire. You will have to verify wiring & correct.
