Not a good idea to run a generator disconnected. Any residual magnetism inside the field coils could cause it to generate power with nowhere to go. This will cause the generator to overheat and be damaged.

I've been running my 3000D for 6 years with No wires hooked to the generator. It's just a belt tensioner. Do you think I hurt the generator?

Six years? So what are you doing? Do you keep the battery on a charger then not run it long enough to need the battery to be charged while in use?

3000D = diesel You need a battery to start it (or park it on a hill) and then no electrics required. I know, I know, it's a schlocky way to run a tractor for 6 years. I've had an alternator and wiring harness on it twice but stripped it all off to put it on another tractor to get it sold.

Evidently not in your case. The key word in my last post was "could" cause the generator to overheat. It all depends on the residual strength of the field coil magnets. If the magnets are weak enough, any power developed is turned into heat and dissipated via the fan.
