871D power steering issues

The video should speak for itself. Just after winter I was getting p/s fluid coming out of my main steering gear box. Bad seal of course. So that snowballed into replacing all the seals and bearings in the steering assembly. Only thing I didn t touch was the springs in the power control valve. New pump, rebuild front spindle bushings, newer power cylinders, replaced the p/s lines. Basically it s a whole new unit. This thing doesn t want to steer at all really. It s making noise from the steering box so idk if the control valve needs looked at or if something is put together wrong. The whole steering unit was pulled apart and laid out in the way it came apart. I m absolutely stumped with this thing. [/u]

There is no video, likely because you're a first time poster (or because you're bashing Bambi :lol: ). You're new pump is bad, or you've got bad or low or no fluid, or you've done something to the control valve you shouldn't have.

Thanks for the welcome!!! Idk the video was 30 seconds so maybe that s too long to post on here. If so I ll take a short one tonight when I get home from work.

As far as the control valve I never touched it. Just pulled it off and set it aside. Kinda thinking maybe a centering spring but it s tough either way I turn the wheel. Fluid is new but it is ATF. I just got some mc134 spec oil so I ll probably flush it and try that instead. As far as the pump that s where I ve been initially thinking since it s always seemed odd to me since I got it back from rebuild. Just wish there was a place that could bench test it. I ll probably end up making my own gauge to read the psi.

Did you follow the procedure when you put the steering column back together of tightening the large nut until snug, then backing it out a specific amount and then staking it in place?

That control valve needs to move up and down a very specific small amount as you turn the steering wheel for it to work properly. If it moves too much or not enough then it doesn't work properly.

Ah yeah I always forget about the post detail. Bummer. Yeah I believe that I did. The wheel rises 1/16" when turning to the left and drops 1/16-3/32" when turning to the right.

I don't know if this is your problem but here's what I found out about mine. I had a lot of air in the system. I did everything possible to eliminate air, filling cylinders, bleeding lines while hooking up, turning lock to lock. I could hear the pressure valve rattling like crazy. I have heard of others posting that they had fluid bubbling up. The system air I believe is impossible to remove because of the lines that go down from the control valve, trapping the air. The pump only compresses the air in the system giving that sluggish steering. I finally pulled the cover off the pump and started the tractor with the cover off, with a quart of p/s oil in hand. As it drew down the fluid I filled it to keep it covering the filter intake. When it leveled off I shut the engine down and bubbles came out, dropping the level. I leveled it back up and started the engine again and gave it whatever oil it needed and shut it down again, more bubbles came out. It only takes 3 or more times to bleed that air bubble out and the pump does most of the work. My power steering now works as manufactured. I had one before that actually shattered the pressure line going into the control valve from the system vibrations. I believe this will help a lot of people on this issue, knowledge is power

well here s a small update. I got it all fixed up. I was able to find a known good used pump locally. All I ended up doing was just cleaning the "new" pump and put it on. My power steering works perfectly now!! So happy that issue is taken care of.

That s one thing I ve always noticed as well. People seem to just fall off the face of the earth and we never get an answer of what fixed it.
