Battle scars on the 4140 - with pics

It s far more of a refresh than a restoration and my main goal is mechanical reliability. Correctness or originality occasionally takes a back seat, particularly to convenience but more often to cost. It will be a working tractor; sheltered but no sheltered life.

In an unconventional way, I thought I d introduce this tractor by first showing the scars of a tough life. I could have fixed all of these but would gain very little reliability. Excepting the rusted wheels, all of these scars predate our 1974 purchase.

At a distance those scars disappear. Ive yet to buy a seat and I guess I ll have to shell out the $85 for a correct emblem. If someone has even a much less than perfect Ford Industrial emblem available please speak up.

This tractor started out life as a backhoe. I still have the backhoe attachment but with no plans to reincorporate. I have a Case 580C backhoe that works well despite being well worn. The lift was added about 30 years ago for hay bale forks and I just recently added a PTO. Kind of wish I had a drawbar, I ll keep an eye out.

In short order I will build a forklift attachment because I will need this to handle logs and slabs around the sawmill. Some weight in the back will be a must, maybe I ll just hang a disc on the three point.

Hello Wilsonsthree, love your tractor. i have a 1963 ford 4140
painted same color. mine came from lumber operation in northwest Wi,
but unfortunately the truck, trailer and tractor went off i75 in
grayling mi and all three suffered damage. my tractor has the elenco
4wd front driving axle and sherman transmission. one year ago i
bought a 1960 ford model 1821 h.d. ind that also has elenco & sherman.
i have a used emblem with a chip out of it that you can have if you
just pay for shipping. I also saw a old car in your beautiful barn,
i am also into old ford cars/trucks. where are you located? i am
in romeo/rochester mi area, north of Detroit. Don Olson 586 752

Wow Curt, you re pretty good. It s a 60 Buick Electra and looks very much like a 59 from behind. The fronts are entirely different. It is the last year that Buick used the gas peddle starting which was standard for Buick starting in 1934.

BTW, it s a nice ride.

Hi Don, I m just east of Tulsa in a small rural community. I happen to be a Buick nut and have a real soft spot for the 30 s Buicks. As far as tractors go I have six of the old fords. I m not picky about the tractors but I want my Buicks to be as accurately original as possible.

I will call you about the emblem, it sounds like what I need and priced right! Thanks so much for offering it.

I'm impressed and amazed at the welding.
It's a professional job there. Probably
took several hours of welding and
peening, cooling, etc.
I'm also wondering how largely that
casting failure has stretched the rear
center housing out of shape. If the
pinion gear is still perpendicular to
the ring gear, (if that matters) or how
the pto lines up between front and rear.
The old tractor was worth doing that to.
To somebody. Not a cheap repair either.
The photos are great.
Thank you.
PS,
I allmosst bought one of those cast iron
noses once. I like them and it was
cheap.
Was going to put a bulb or bulbs inside
the grill and use it to light the front
steps here.

That s actually brazing and the some of the repair is on the other side as well. A recent inspection of the inside of the housing shows an equally artful mastery of the brazing skill. One has to be concerned about the strength of this fix and it s one of the reasons that I m not eager to put that backhoe back on. In my opinion, that heavy subframe doesn t offer enough resistance to twisting.

Just last week I was thinking about how impressive it would be to have one of those nose castings painted up and used to support a glass table top. It s a work of art!

Thanks,
Joel

I had to grow up to realize that GM put the starting solenoid on top of the starter whereas Ford used a remote starting solenoid (relay). The GM gas
pedal start button was mechanically connected to the solenoid. Do remember that on my 47 Chebby P/U, my first truck purchase as a teen.

I m probably not going to be much help. The only problems I ve solved with a 4 speed is to get the shifting mechanisms unstuck.
The 4 speed transmissions are almost all alike and very well understood by many participants on this forum. You might try searching the archives and if you still can t resolve your problems, post a new thread and provide as much information as possible. You ll either have your answers very quickly or you ll know what your next step will be to further diagnose.

Thanks and good luck and Merry Christmas,
Joel

Very good, I'm having the same problem with the one I have, because the gears do that often the result is now broke teeth on trans gears. I'm curious if you would know the $ value of the 4140 in rebuilt condition or in this kind of used condition value difference???
