Working on 801. Won't run on rear cylinder. My gauge shows near 90 lbs compression, but 120 on front two cylinders and a little less on 3. Don't run right on 3 either. Could my gauge be wrong? How much should they have. Distributer looks good, plugs fire every time.

Mite not hurt to pull the valve cover and see if the #4 valves are operating properly 9pushrods in place, not bent, have "lift" and setting is correct, if all that seems OK, do a leakdown test to see where the compression is going.

It should have 120 at sea level with a calibrated gauge. It will run on 60, but difficult to start on starter motor. If the exhaust note is not lisping I would be inclined to suspect a caked intake valve restricting incoming charge.

(quoted from post at 10:59:03 10/22/19) Had cover off. Looks good. Checked compression with all 4 plugs out. Kinda got me puzzled.

Elton, What does "looks good" mean to you?

have been reading these forums for many years & have gathered that at the first sign of any tractor problem, one should jerk the head off, even if a flat tire!

Valves opening with a little slack in the rockers when closed. Oiling, and cannot see any compression loss on top. I will gauge the valves when I get time. I believe it possible that head gasket blown.

hy the belief? Where did it blow to? Water in oil, oil in water, bubbles in radiator, compression escaping to outside between head & block? Where?

No water in oil, nothing seems to be happening in radiator. Cannot see much compression loss any where. Tractor will hit on no. 3 and 4 cold, does not take long before you can pull those wires with no effect on engine. You can cross them and get nothing. Pull no. 1 or 2 and it will die. However no. 4 will show 90 lbs cold but drop to 60 warm. No. 1 and 2 will consistently show 120, no. 3 will drop to about 80 warm and 110 cold. Puzzling.

lmao

Well I should not respond to this, but your lmao makes it easy. When someone comes on here and asks for honest advice and gets a smartxxx reply that should be seen as a failure or at least a weakness in that person who chooses to embarrass himself buy seemingly implying that the fellow who ask for advice must be stupid then you need to think how bad that really is. But if you condone it ok. I would say that I believe if someone does not have relevant advice maybe they should be cool.
