3600 no fuel

THe latest trouble with my friends recently acquired 3600 gas is after he let it run out of gas, he could not keep it running. We took the lines
apart and found some blockage Question 1. The line goes from the tank, up to the front of the block, into a fitting, back out again and then to the
carb. What is the purpose of all this? Why doesn't it go from tank direct to sediment bowl and carb? If we put air pressure on it it will blow
through. Mouth pressure going in, brings some air back out but there seems to be quite diminished. After all that we tried gravity flow gas and it
barely drips. We have never worked on a tractor this new so it has us bewildered. Thanks for any advice.

Would have never guessed there was a fuel pump on a tractor that old. That is probably the problem.

Since it is coincidental with the tractor running out of gas, can running the tractor out of gas cause it to lose its prime? Or can running it out of gas ruin the pump?

When he ran it out of fuel he probably sucked the dregs out of the tank and has plugged filters now.
There are 3 sometimes 4 fuel filters on that tractor. First is a screen on top of the shut off valve under the tank. Second is a screen on the top of the fuel pump. Third is Inside the sediment bowl and last but not always a screen in the brass fitting where the fuel line enters the carburator.
That fuel system does need maintenance every so often and they rarely get it - untill you run one out of fuel.
It's time to deain the tank and go through the system and clean all your filters or this will be a recurring problem.

Gravity flow from the tank should be a steady stream so look for a blockage right at the tank outlet. You will need to empty the tank, then remove the fuel shutoff at the tank. There should be a replaceable filter screen attached to the fuel shutoff valve. Clean it, blow it out with air hose, or replace it.

The tractor should run without the fuel pump but the flow when the fuel gets low will not let it have full power. The fuel pump gives it full flow until the fuel runs out.

(quoted from post at 09:55:54 10/25/19) IT is in the fuel pump where the blockage is.

The top of the fuel pump has a screen filter in it. It is most likely clogged. I don't know if you have to pull the pump to remove the top or if you can do it while it's still installed. Might depend on the size of your hands.

Both of us have big meathooks so if we have to take stuff apart to get at those filters we will probably
replace the pump as it is only $15 or so. Thanks.
