960 back fired

After running the square baler for
a bit, I idled the tractor down
and shut it off. It then released
a mighty back fire! It did that
both times the other day while
testing the baler. I used it
several days ago for a couple
hours box blading and it didn't
back fire when I shut it off.
Rich? Lean? Timing? Thanks!

The baler was working it harder and the engine was hotter. Letting it idle a minute or two before shutting it down after it has been working hard to cool it down will take care of the backfire. Late timing can cause a backfire too but late timing is more likely to cause dieseling when the engine is shut down

Just let it cool down a little more before turning off, you probably had unburned fuel get into the hot exhaust manifold.
