I just purchased a 860 ford. It pops out of 3rd gear. If you put slight pressure on the shiftier it stays in gear. What could be the problem?

Such symptom is caused by wear in the shifting collars (teeth) and other transmission parts. Most well worn Ford 5 speed transmissions will jump out of third (and sometimes other gears) under a heavy overhauling load but not under pull. If yours is doing so under load, it is likely very badly worn.

As previously suggested, inspect/replace the detent balls and springs but do not expect this to solve your problem, especially if jumping out of gear under load.
