Hi, I have been working on my sons tractor, 1974 ford 3000 diesel
It won't start due to low compression(140 psi). It always needed a small blast of ether to start when cold. Last spring he used a lot of ether,no start. What damage does excessive ether do. I think we will do an in frame,if wear is not too bad.I have the repair manual, and to remove the cast iron pan it says to put in longer 8in bolts
from front casting to engine and move casting and whole front end
forward 1.5 in. Is this the best way? It also says to put wood wedges in axle/ spindle some where, why? Tractor is sitting outside
on a gravel pad, will figure out how to lift front in order to move
front end ahead 1.5 in
Trying to get some info so when we get to tractor we might have some idea what we are doing.

Putting longer bolts in there is the way to do it. Look at the top surface of the front axle. You will see the two horizontal pads that contact the bottom of the bolster to keep the tractor from rolling.

I have a 1965 Ford 3000 3 cyl. diesel that had a lot of blowby when running so I took the engine apart to find broken top rings on 2 of the 3 pistons... see the pics I post up. Any the previous owner said he's always squirted it good with ether to get it started. Well I bought his problem pretty cheap so I didn't mind tearing into the engine to see what was wrong. At first I was hoping for just a blown head gasket but it was fine so I dove deeper to find the broken rings. it was an easy job and i'm glad I did it

Showcrop is correct. If you don't use wood wedges or longer bolts, the tractor front end will swing down as soon as you take off the trans and rear wheels. Reason: there is only the front axle pivot pin to hold things once the tractor is split.
